The European Commission proposal for Horizon Europe presented in June 2018 includes an important novelty called MISSIONS. The aim is to enable the research and innovation agenda to reconnect with citizens and involving them in shaping a better future for Europe. Missions are defined as “ambitious, bold goals to tackle issues that affect our daily lives”. Important aspects are to strengthen the innovation impact of projects and include civil society organisations and citizens.Viable Cities, Sweden’s new long term research and innovation programme for smart and sustainable cities – with funding from Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas – is inspired by the Horizon Europe and the IPCC report 2018. Cities are central to climate work, and in many cases the urban climate targets are far more ambitious than national targets.Viable Cities has just opened a new call for proposals – Carbon neutral cities 2030. The aim is to mobilize cities/regions, researchers, industry and civil society and accelerate achieving carbon neutrality in Swedish cities by 2030. Key enablers are digitalisation and citizen engagement. The aim of the conference is to learn about Horizon Europe and the role of cities in achieving important societal missions. We will explore how Swedish cities and citizen can take the lead in these new challenging developments and how Viable Cities can support research and innovation to that end.Join us for this European Viable Cities Day!
