Spanish and Swedish cities join forces in becoming climate neutral

On Wednesday, a milestone event for the European climate transition in cities took place. For the first time, representatives from Swedish and Spanish cities met to exchange experiences on how to speed up the transition to climate neutral and sustainable cities through Climate City Contract.

“This was not only a historic event”, says Julio Lumbreras, programme manager for the Spanish organisation CitiES 2030, “but a very important one since the cities in our programs have real experience from working such contracts and can contribute with many insights”.

Since 2020, nine Swedish cities are working with the Viable Cities Climate City Contract as a tool to strengthen and accelerate the climate transition. Now eight Spanish cities are – inspired by the work in Sweden – working with a Spanish Climate City Contract.

The meeting was organised within the EU project NetZeroCities, by Viable Cities and citiES2030. Never before have cities from Spain and Sweden exchanged experiences regarding climate city contracts.

The high-level discussions during the meeting provided a good foundation for future interactions.

“We are looking forward to continuing and deepening this collaboration since we want to accelerate at all levels: local, regional, national and at the EU level”, says Albert Edman, international strategist at the Swedish innovation programme Viable Cities.

The cities participating in this event was, from Sweden: Gothenburg, Järfälla, Lund, Malmö, Stockholm, Umeå, Uppsala and Växjö. And from Spain: Barcelona, Madrid, Soria, Valencia, Valladolid and Vitoria-Gasteiz.
